Titanium industry giant Allegheny Technology Co. Ltd. recently announced that it will indefinitely shutdown the Raleigh titanium sponge factory. The company's chairman and chief executive Richard J.harshman said,‘it was originally expected to spend about $1 billion for Raleigh titanium sponge factory, but then announced to shutdown. We did spend a lot of money on Raleigh, but luckily it wasn't $1 billion, just $500 million and it was still a big number. This decision is based on the market situation.’
Boeing, which is based in Chicago, hope to improving the design and construction of the Boeing 787, which is expected to provide a more comprehensive integration of processed materials. From the point of view of risk management, Harshman said, first of all, this is not a requirement, followed by the ability to produce titanium sponge and capacity is the most important. Due to the lower demand in the industrial market, the demand for titanium sponge in the world is reduced. Meanwhile, the production of low grade titanium sponge has been improved and began used in aircraft. Due to challenges faced by Raleigh titanium sponge plant, such as the cost of raw materials of titanium tetrachloride and magnesium. Another is the cost of transportation, which was much higher than we originally conceived.
Today, due to excess supply of titanium sponge in the world, even if we use full capacity in production, the cost of producing sponge in Raleigh is much higher than we get from the outside world.
